De jaarlijkse Innovatielezing van het Ministerie van Economische Zaken werd in december 2001 verzorgd door prof. Michael E. Porter. In zijn lezing ging Porter in op het concurrentievermogen en de innovatieprestaties van Nederland. Hoewel de Nederlandse economie het goed heeft gedaan is deze voorspoed misschien niet duurzaam, want de funderingen ervan zijn zwak. Porter adviseert onder meer om het traditionele industriebeleid te vervangen door clustergebaseerde ontwikkeling, om het overheidsbeleid te richten op wetenschap, technologie en innovatie, om meer nadruk te leggen op R&D, en om de samenwerking tussen overheid, bedrijfsleven en universiteiten anders in te richten en te versterken.
The 2001 Innovation Lecture organised by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs was delivered by Professor Michael E. Porter. In his speech, Porter addressed the competitiveness and innovation performance of the Netherlands. The Netherlands’ economy has performed well, but this prosperity may not be sustainable because its foundations are weak. Porter’s recommendations include replacing the country’s traditional industrial policy with cluster-based development, redirecting the country’s policy approach to science, technology and innovation, placing greater emphasis on R&D, and reorienting and increasing the level of collaboration between government, businesses and universities.
